I haven't touched this thing in ages, so my apologies. Or perhaps my apologies for bugging you with a new entry now. Pff. Anyway, I have nothing say except that I'm switching into Scholar's Electives and screw you anyone who tries to tell me it's a bad idea. I'm covering my ass for grad school and taking the courses I actually want to take, not the courses cranky, asshole, ageist English profs think I should take (yes, I have one in particular in mind here). Anyway, this is likely what I'm going to be taking next year, or something like this...
English 316f Literary Theory Since New Criticism
English 250g Topics in 18th century lit - Democracy and Radicalism in the 18th century (subversion of enlightenment stuff - whee!)
ICS 257f International Cultures of Gendering
ICS 412f Honours Seminar, Rights and Ethics
ICS 321g Directed Readings, probably on some area of continental philosophy or postcolonial theory
English 281f/g Feminist Literary Theory
Philosophy 350g Aesthetics
Philosophy 226f/g Philosophy of Science (science credit, lol)
English 259E Shakespeare (read: need a pre-18th century course for conservative grad school requirements, but the prof is great, and hey, I've got nothing against Will)
Er yeah, or something like that. As for the English prof mentioned begrudgingly above, for some reason a 20 minute meeting I had with him a week ago is still bugging me. After meeting with two other profs who were really excited about my plans for my degree and really willing to help, I meet with this guy, who has no respect for anything written after modernism (let alone anything with post as a prefix) and has even less respect it seems for the opinions or ideas of anyone who does not have "PhD." after her or his name. Basically his advice to me was a) do your undergrad degree properly and read all the 16th and 17th century lit so you'll have a proper English degree, or b) transfer schools and take comparative lit. Riiiight. Thanks a bunch. Oh and did I mention he showed up 20 minutes late and never apologized? I mean, not even a 'oh sorry I'm a little late' in passing. OK, I don't really care about this. The guy just really really bugs me at this point. At the end of the meeting he hands me my graded essay - A- so I'm not complaining - but then there's about a page and a half of red writing just ripping my arguments apart. Basically the paper was an examination of Wisslawa Szymborska (a very pomo's poet) and her take on Plato's ideas of mimesis, and his (the prof's) beef was that any claims that a solid, objective and representable reality may not actually exist in any real way - well that's just silly and weak at best. Go read some Aristotle, stop picking on Plato, and respect yer fuckin elders.
Aaaaanyway, time to digress on that particular annoyance. I've been wretchedly unproductive these last few days, though my exam on Tuesday went rather well. Exam tomorrow morning - even though it's Saturday and sunny and 9 am, and even though there's a party I wish I was going to tonight. Sigh. Oh well. This was a ridiculously easy class all term which means I put zero effort to it and skipped more than a few classes, and which means I've only just started studying for it now. Um, yeah. It should be ok...
In other news I'm giddy excited about the Ani Difranco concert on Monday and Toronto and such and such. it will be especially sweet because I will have just finished an essay and an exam. Ok so there will be another one on Thursday but it will still be sweet.
My boyfriend is receiving a surprising number of offers for homemade porn videos from girls on his msn list. Ok off to have some supper.
